The truth about Domain Names

“You get nothing for free in this world”, as the old saying goes.  Which is also pretty much true on the world wide web. The same goes for the £1 domain name deal, it often comes with strings attached.  Firstly, the cost of domain name has to be paid to the regular, whom record owner details and name servers etc. So some hosting companies will cover this cost for you, which may be costly later.

So here our quick guide what to look out for.

What's in a name?

Let’s start by explaining what a domain name*.  To put it simply, its a bit like your home address or business address.  It is where all your correspondence is sent. Or in other words, your visitors or traffic.  You can more or less select anything as your domain name (terms & conditions apply).  For example: yourname.com, yourbusiness.co.uk.  If your particular request is not available, there are often different extension i.e. .net .biz .co and loads more beside available in our store.

The pit falls with cheap domain names

Other Hosting Companies

Who owns it?

Some hosting companies register the domain on your behalf, but log their company details with the regulator. Which effectively they own it not you. This is often for the first year, which allows them to charge for extra services or charges.

Parking

Once you have purchased your domain name it needs to be parked somewhere. Again read the small print, as you may find if you choose not to activity host it (create a website) the company may charge just to have it site on their naming server.

Transfer out

Once again, read the terms and conditions, you may find there is a admin fee to pay if you decide to move 'your' domain to another provider. Beware, if it is not in your name or within first year, it can get messy and complicated.

Hosting by the back door

Some of the more well known companies offer cheap hosting deals for the first few months with you cut price domain name. But watch out as costs can begin to rack up once the trail period lapses.
